Atomic Faith

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Genesis 1:1. Many people know how it goes. It is the first verse of the Bible and I always get hung up on it. Some theologian right?

The cool thing is, we can look around and see that it is true. God created everything and Genesis does not need “the science” to support it.

Still, I like to take a faith-first approach and look at science as a cool afterthought.

As I thought about what to write, I often got overwhelmed as everything in my life pointed back to a very creative God-

The creative God.

One example of this comes from my days as a chemistry teacher. Every day I am amazed by how intricate of a world God made, how it often self-organizes, and how it does not unravel into chaos- Like honestly, it would without God.

An illustration of his providence can be found in an atom

Atoms are the building blocks of the entire world and they are so fascinating.

Chemistry has many things that one must understand in order to make chemistry “work.” Chemists must understand exactly what an atom is. But the truth is- Noone is really sure of anything.

For example, a common phrase in chemistry is- “Opposites attract.”

You see the Bible really does have the answer for everything. Including some pressing chemistry questions (I wish my students would read more) such as, what s the world made out of? Well Hebrews 11:3 says,

“Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”

But yet, the middle of the atom is made of positive and neutral particles; which are not opposites. Chemists really don’t know what makes up the middle of the atom (nucleus), so they just slap a cover-all term, “nuclear glue,” on it and call it an answer.

As a Christian, I know a far better answer-

God.

I know this because Colossians 1:17 says that by Him, “all things consist.” He is the glue that holds everything together!

So look around. Look up. Then look down. After that, look side to side. There is a wonderful God who made wonderful things. Do not fall prey to the vain philosophies and sciences of men; rather acknowledge the truth and beauty of a benevolent God!

God bless!
