Safe and Sound

It seems the word of the year has become the word, “safe.” The irony is that here on Earth, nothing is 100% safe.

The hymn we’re discussing today assures us of sure safety, being in Christ. The chorus to this song exclaims,

“I’ve anchored my soul in the haven of rest. I’ll sail the wide seas no more. The tempest may sweep o’er the wild, stormy deep: In Jesus I’m safe ever more.”

We do not have exemptions from storms in this life, as the Word say’s in Job 5:7,

“Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.”

As also affirmed in Titus 2:13, we who are in the Body of Christ, have a blessed hope,

“Looking for that blessed hope, and glorious appearing of the great God, and our Savior Jesus Christ.”

Today’s hymn was written by Henry L. Gilmour (1836-1920) who came to the U.S.A. from Ireland, so he knew a little about a ship in stormy water. The music was composed by George D. Moore (1800-1900), an evangelist from Pennsylvania. The song was written in 1890.

As you sing this hymn, keep in remembrance Philippians 4:7 as it states,

“And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

The Haven of Rest

1.My soul in sad exile was out on life’s sea, so burdened with sin and distressed,

Till I heard a sweet voice saying, “Make me your choice,” and I entered the haven of rest.

2. I yielded myself to his tender embrace, and faith taking hold of the Word,

My fetters fell off, and I anchored my soul. The haven of rest is my Lord.

3. The song of my soul, since the Lord made me whole, has been the old story so blest,

Of Jesus, who’ll save who so ever will have a home in the haven of rest.

4. O come to the Savior. He patiently waits to save by His power divine.

Come, anchor your soul in the haven of rest, and say, “My Beloved is mine.”

Chorus: I’ve anchored my soul in the haven of rest. I’ll sail the wide seas no more.

The tempest may sweep o’er the wild, stormy deep: In Jesus I’m safe ever more.

Psalm 104:31-35
