Christ Arose

Robert Lowry (1826-1899) was a Philadelphia Baptist preacher and hymn writer. In 1874, he wrote the popular hymn “Christ Arose!” He also arranged the tune.

While having devotions one evening, he was impressed with the events associated with Christ’s resurrection when he read Luke 24:6-7.

We read in 1 Corinthians 15:4; 13-14, our hope lies in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. And so, we love to sing about it every chance we get.

While this song does not necessarily address doctrine unique to this dispensation of grace, it does a great job of reminding us of and rejoicing in Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection without placing believers under wrong teachings from Jesus’s Earthly ministry to Israel.

1. Low in the grave He lay, Jesus my Saviour;

Waiting the coming day; Jesus my Lord!

2. Vainly they watched His bed, Jesus my Saviour;

Vainly they sealed the dead; Jesus my Lord!

3. Death cannot keep his prey, Jesus my Saviour;

He tore the bards away; Jesus my Lord!

Chorus: Up from the grave, He arose! With mighty triumph o’er His foes.

He arose a victor from the dark domain, and He lives forever with the saints to reign!

He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose!

Psalm 104:31-35
