My Savior, ‘Tis of Thee

The tune, “God Save the King/Queen,” is a popular tune in sheet music and was used by many nations. In America, its history can be traced to Samuel F. Smith (1808-1895).

In 1832, he put words to what is now known as “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee” which has become an unofficial American anthem. There are many wonderful positive aspects of our great land and give praise to God for all of His past blessings.

Combined with a general doctrinal aspect, there is now a stronger orientation in our churches on “defending freedom.”

Through flag waving and military memorials, rather than our ministry in Christ. The Bible says that the source of our freedom comes from our deliverance in Christ, not from a country.

Now I am proud to live in the greatest country on Earth but like Jesus said in Luke 2:49,

“Wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?”

So let the Church be the Church and the government be the government (Matthew 22:21).

Saying this, the focus of these new lyrics to the same popular tune of “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” is on the “liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free” (Galatians 5:1). Our liberty in Christ made us free from the Law, sin, and death.

As ye have received Him, walk in Him (Colossians 2:6). Carry this musical message as you go.

My Savior, ‘Tis of Thee

1. My Savior, ’tis of Thee. Our God of liberty, of Thee I sing,

Hand where-by Jesus died, planned to be crucified;

There every man was tried,

Let freedom ring!

2. By nature sin in me; Man’s blood can’t set me free,

I look above; My faults became the chain;

Thy Law was made therein; His death was made my gain,

Commend His love!

3. I stand in liberty; No army captures me; The work is done;

Great men of old have fought against what pride has wrought;

Not knowing what You bought;

Freedom is won!

4. All nationalities, in bonds or poverty, can be set free;

“God, help us to be bold,” our souls to You are sold;

Thy Gospel must be told;

Make all men see!

Sing as unto the Lord

(Psalm 104:31-35)
