A Faithful Foreigner

And Ittai answered the king, and said, As the Lord liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will thy servant be. ~ 2 Samuel 15:21

The adoption process is such a long but beautiful process. Through a series of steps, a family bond is created between two people absolutely foreign to each other. Loyalty is established without a series of troubling trials testing the mettle of parents and a child.

In 2 Samuel 15, King David is in the midst of a trial. His son has developed a coup and is attempting to usurp David’s kingship. Within this captivating story we see a foreigner, Ittai the Gittite, pledge his loyalty to David; despite David’s plea for him to leave.

Likewise, God pledges faithfulness and goodness to those who call upon His name and believe in His Gospel (Ephesians 2:19-22). Undeserved faithfulness that surpasses human logic and understanding. This faithfulness should incite us, His adopted children, to a pledge of loyalty and obedience to Him as well. A loyalty that is not broken, in death or life.
