Take Your Vitamins!

The late great philosopher Hulk Hogan once told his students, “To all my little Hulkamaniacs, say your prayers, take your vitamins and you will never go wrong.”

In the same way famed gospel singer, Mahalia Jackson, is quoted as saying, “Faith and prayer are the vitamins of the soul; man cannot live in health without them.”

Interestingly enough, I found these quotes soon after I took my daily vitamin.

For years, I have taken Men’s One-A-Day vitamins because I recognized just how many healthy elements are packed into one small capsule.

As curiosity overcame me, I was presented with a question that I believe should be addressed in the life of a believer. What makes a spiritual vitamin?

To answer this, I looked at my daily vitamin for comparison.

Spiritual Vitamin

The majority of a Men’s One-A-Day is vitamin B-12. The human body utilizes B-12 for many purposes but essentially energizes the body because of its crucial role in red blood cell formation.

For the church (The Body), our B-12 is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. From the earliest days of Levitical law, it was understood that life is in the blood (Leviticus 17:11).

As Christians this is exceedingly true. Our life is in the precious blood of Jesus Christ and we are energized by His resurrection. Without the Gospel, this mighty spiritual multi-vitamin is essentially worthless.

The next largest vitamin group in the Men’s One A-Day is vitamin D. Many know this vitamin as the vitamin that strengthens bones because it absorbs calcium. Vitamin D makes our bones strong.

Our bones are the foundation of the body. All things are supported by them. The bones of the body of Christ must be the word of Christ.

In Ephesians 2:20-21, Paul articulates that Christians are,

“…are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone;

In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord.”

Our foundation can be in no other Word (1 Timothy 6:3-4). So take your vitamin D[octrine]!

Coming in third place for percent vitamin content is vitamin B-5. This vitamin serves the interesting function of breaking down fats and wastes, so that the body can rebuild.

When we are broken down and in need of waste management, this is where our spiritual vitamin B-5 comes alive. Our vitamin B-5 is prayer.

In prayer, we go to the Holy Spirit to intercede for us and we can rest in assurance that God can carry our infirmities and weakness (Romans 8:26).

As for the many other elements in the spiritual multivitamin, these are the good things that we as Christians are called to dwell on such as the honest and true things we are called to in Philippians 4:8

These things include the many sequential benefits of our tribulations as mentioned in Romans 5:3-4 which produces “patience, experiences, and hope.”

Bring It Together

All of these components work together to improve the spiritual health of the believer. They have far reaching benefits within each member of the Body!

These elements are encapsulated by faith and by faith we receive them. The Gospel we receive by faith (Ephesians 2:8-9), doctrine we receive by faith (Romans 10:17), prayer is conducted by faith (1 John 5:14), and in faith we face the tribulations of the world!

So take your vitamins fellow saints.

Join me in the venture to strengthen the Body and serve our God fully nourished!

God bless!
