Measurement.
It is an important concept that we all use to be successful in life.
Carpenters and contractors utilize the skill to create the buildings we live and work in.
People mentally measure the space it takes to cram all of their luggage into the back of their car in order to take it all with them on vacation.
We measure the temperature every time we check how hot or cold it is.
Nearly every action we take requires a form of measurement.
That includes our faith.
Oxford defines measurement as,
“The act or the process of finding the size, quantity, or degree of something.”
Measurement is built into the fabric of the Bible’s composition.
When someone refers to the Bible as “canon”, they are affirming its power as a measuring unit.
The word “canon” comes from the Greek word, “kanon”, which is a straight, reed (rod) that was used much like a yard or meter stick in ancient times.
It is our rule of faith.
It is by the canon that we are able to measure what is right and thus what is wrong.
By the canon (The Word of God), Christ’s Gospel is revealed to us and we see that God’s ruler is the most reliable guide.
2 Timothy 3:16 affirms,
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”
When we study Scripture, we are reading an accurate measurement that ultimately aligns us in our effort of producing Spiritual fruits (Galatians 5:22-23).
When it comes to measurement, the canon also shows us that from the moment of salvation (Ephesians 4:7), we are all given a measure of faith.
In Romans 12:3, this truth is unveiled when Paul teaches,
“For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.”
No matter where we are Spiritually, our position does not change. The measurement reads that our position is in Christ.
It reads that we are dead to sin (Romans 8:10) and hidden in Christ (Colossians 3:3).
This is all done by the grace of God so no man can boast.
Rather, turn our heads to Heaven, offering thanksgiving to God for sharing His Word with humanity (Psalm 107:1).
God is the master contractor and the master builder. His word is never off.
His measurements are an accurate guide to pleasing Him and possess the perfect reading of salvation, written by Jesus Christ himself.
