Why Wait?

When I was a young boy in high school, riding home from school on the bus, I heard an older boy say to another boy in a conversation,

“One day, after I live my life, I will become a Christian. I want to party. I want to have all the sex I can and do what I want, then I will become a Christian.”

From a young age, I understood that this was a scary, risky gamble for a number of reasons.

One basis for this being a frightening position is that when an individual thinks like this, they diminish Christianity to nothing more than a list of rules. Faith becomes religion and not (Sorry for the cliche) relationship.

Selective Christianity becomes legalistic rather than edified and enriched by the grace and Word of God.

I also found this boy’s logic to be flawed in that the chances of truly understanding or having the desire to “be saved” is slim to none, without the Holy Spirit.

Saying this, I make the point that fleshly indulgences are enticing. They are not something that person just decides to put aside after their body and minds are used up.

One of the Spirit’s role prior to salvation is to convict. In reference to the Holy Spirit, Jesus explains in John 16:8 that,

“And when He is come, He will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they believe not on Me”.

Conviction is not a self-inflicted cry for help to God.

The flesh that we glorify before our placement into the Body of Christ is alluring.

In Galatians 5:19-21 Paul states,

“Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God”.

The works of the flesh is a list of all the things that our culture loves to watch, do, and promote.

Without the power of the Holy Spirit, the plans of that boy will be foiled.

In Proverbs 19:21 Solomon affirms this when teaching,

“There are many devices in man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand.”

There are many more notes I can offer in regards to these plans, but the last one that I would like to propose is this.

Why wait?

Do not be fooled by all the attractive deceptions!

The Lord has so much in store for us. He has equipped us with all Spiritual blessings in Heavenly places (Ephesians 1:3) and has allotted us an amazing inheritance there as well (Ephesians 1:11-14).

No need to wait to receive such a spectacular gift. The Bible says today is the day of salvation! So why wait?

“For He saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.”

There is no guarantee of another day to make such a choice as Christ’s rapture of the Church is impending.

So why wait?
