“…And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power” ~ Ephesians 1:19

In the Biblical epistle of Ephesians, the apostle Paul opens this beautiful message with a strong case for the spectacular work and character of God. He refers to God as “Father,” “Lord,” and as having “glory.” He details what lengths God goes to reveal the mystery of godliness and the fellowship of the mystery.

There are so many glorious adjectives to pull from these verses but its not the gentle adjectives that check my eye the most. It is the strong and demanding ones such as power! But I like the word “power” but I love even more the Koine Greek word for it- “dynamis.”

This word should look familiar as it is the word that we here in English get the term “dynamite.” Upon its invention, dynamite was used for everything. It was spontaneous. Powerful! Infinitely useful in solving major problems!

But still, even dynamite was so underwhelming compared to the glory of the Father! Even though our humanly uses have watered down the word so much, it does help us to visualize the power of the God we serve.

But in verse 19 we see that He has this dynamite power, but He also works it for our good as the Church. We have the God of all Power to see us through every situation in life (Psalm 62:11).

The news gets even better. God, in His infinite kindness and power shares this power with us by the Holy Spirit. I know this because of 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

That news should be enough to make any Christian light up like dynamite!
