The Great Physician

“The good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease.” ~ Sir William Osler

Sir William Osler, one of the “Big Four” founding professors of Johns Hopkins Hospital explained the difference between a good doctor and a great doctor. As I pray, I often attribute the title of the Great Physician to God as I bring my needs before Him in prayer. 

Many are familiar with the famous verse Philippians 4:6-7, 

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Knowing God is mighty capable of healing our physical needs, we must also recognize His ability to resolve our spiritual needs. Both have a spectrum of health that can easily be deviated from. 

Addressing these needs in prayer requires two things. One is to ask. Two must be paired with it. Thanksgiving. 

As we pray to God, the Great Physician who not only absolves the disease of sin and death but moreover renews the inner patient loves to hear from those who are within His provision (Ephesians 1:7; Romans 8:26).

He is the only one deserving of such an awe-inspiring title and capable of being what it describes- Great.
