Mean, Median, Mode

Nerd alert: This devotional contains math.

Math that you may have seen at some point in your young academic careers. A math that may still haunt you to this very day when your children bring homework, scary I know, home.

Mean. Median. Mode.

Now before I go any further, I know you are wondering, “What on Earth does mean, median, and mode have to do with Jesus?” It may be complicated at the moment, but soon it will be easy as “pi.” Math jokes done. On we go.

Mean, median, and mode are what is called “measures of center.” This means in statistics, that these numbers become the center of your search for meaning.

On average, you may be most familiar with mean, which means the average of something. Nearly everything is averaged in modern society including: Weather, income, government census, and a large variety of demographics. The mean of something is highly utilized in modern society!

Median also has so many uses although a little less focused on. The median of something is simply the middle of something. We use median a lot in statistics showing median incomes and costs!

But then, you have mode. Mode shows frequency. Which typically is not anything really anybody cares about. For example, if you are trying to decide whether or not your child is on their phone too much. This is a genuine concern.

So you for a week you write down their daily screen time. It is a follows, in hours:

2, 4, 4, 4, 8, 9, 15

On average, your child is on their phone 6.57 hours a day. Yes, almost a whole work day. Their median time is 6 hours. But their mode is much less at only 4 hours, being the most frequent.

Mode does not serve much purpose, at least not like this.

What mode does show is important is things like which gender uses something more or showing what positions are most popular in a company. Mode answers questions that other methods just can not answer!

So… let me ask you this.

“Do you ever feel like a mode?” Do you ever feel like you are missing your purpose? Like an outcast? Like the worst at your job or just so insignificant that if you fell off the face of the Earth that no one would care?

You may not be a mean. You may not be the median, But I promise you, you can be a mode and make big change. You are still enough that Christ came to Earth and died, so you can be in the court of God as coheir.

The Apostle Paul testifies that, “This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief” (1 Timothy 1:15).

Christ came, saves humanity, and on top of that, gives us purpose and inheritance. Your mode is to glorify God and point others to His glory, for He desires all men and women to be saved and come unto the knowledge of the Truth (1 Timothy 2:4). And not everyone has a function as we are sent to live this purpose!

“For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another” ~ Romans 12:4-5

God’s grace is sufficient to carry us when we fail but know on average, your median, is the mode of worship! Live, frequently- No, eternally, glorifying God! Glorify God today in this truth that you are loved by the Creator!
