“All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.” ~ 1 Corinthians 6:23
“All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.” ~ 1 Corinthians 10:23
Take note of the word “expedient.” Now take hold of the word “grace.“
Living in grace, we have spiritual freedom and furthermore, we have physical freedom to do much while no longer being under the Law. But not everything is expedient or profitable. Profitable as in edifying. Edifying as in it will build you up.
For example, vigorous cardiorespiratory exercise may be extremely beneficial for me! To a recovering heart attack or stroke victim, maybe not so much.
Adderall and similar medicines may be great for improving focus and concentration for someone with ADHD, but for those without ADHD, can make someone dangerously overactive and hyperemotional.
Roe v. Wade made abortion lawful in all 50 states of the United States for many years, but it sure didn’t build up anybody. It just removed bodies and seared consciousness.
Following Levitical Law was incredibly beneficial for Jewish Levite Priests 2,000 years ago, but for a Christian, it is best not to frustrate the grace of God.
“Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified… I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.” ~ Galatians 2:16; 21
All things may be lawful, but not all things build you up. Not all things progress towards godliness, as a matter of fact, somethings do the opposite.
“…The just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them” (Galatians 3:11-12).
Live in grace. Be graceful with yourself, be graceful with others, and most importantly- Love the grace of God. For it is by His grace that you can live in grace. It comes full circle!
Seek good things that build you up and uplift the grace of God (Philippians 4:8)! And remember, what’s good for you may be bad for me.
Vice verse. Praise God!
