Faith of Mario

Most kids nowadays, as of the last 30 years that is, have played some variant of Super Mario Brothers. Recently, I had the nice experience to watch the new Mario movie with my wife.

Following the movie, my philosophical mind kicked in and I saw some interesting resemblance between Mario and the Christian.

At first, I thought of bashing the Christian prayer life that seeks “power ups” as they pray. Many think of a time of prayer, as a time of ascertaining a spiritual bonus.

However, then I thought. What is so wrong with this? The Bible tells us to trust in God when we are weak, but then we trust God for strength, and religious authorities will bash you for being prideful (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Well today I proclaim, let God be your power-up (1 Corinthians 6:14). We may not have Bowser in our universe, but we do have an adversary that is in fact much worse (Ephesians 6:10-18). But a God, who is far greater and has won the victory (John 16:33)!

Fight the good fight, for you have a Holy power-up! Then perhaps you’ll have the faith of Mario!
