Fishing, Wishing.

I enjoy fishing. It is a past time, like many others can relate, I never have enough time to enjoy.

Nonetheless, my wife Hallie and I recently were looking to indulge in some fishing time as we vacationed at the beach.

Unfortunately however, out of all the things I was likely to forget when leaving, I left my rod and tackle box.

So as we entered the pier bait shop, I asked if they rented rods and they only sold.

So, as any fisherman would know, fishing requires quite a few things. It demands a rod, lures, hooks, plyers, fillet knife, bait, and (for sea fishing) it wouldn’t be a bad idea to get some gloves.

Needless to say, this fishing outing was a pricey expedition. And as I sat for an hour or two, I discovered it was a bitter one too.

I caught nothing. Zilch. Nada. Zero fish. This is the first time I have never caught at least one thing from this pier. And forgive the pun-

I was salty.

But assuredly, God works all things to the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). Forgive me if you find this verse a bit out of context.

But as I later thought on this experience, my mind migrated to the uncanny similarity between people and their affinity for depravity.

All of humanity is born into sin. It is not as if they forgot their fishing rod, or righteousness in this case, they truly never had it.

So what does the world do? They buy more and more useless wickedness with their time and effort, catching nothing good, storing up wrath for themselves.

But what do you do in these cases?

The simple answer is: Change locations.

More specifically, change positions (1 Corinthians 12:27).

In birth, we are positioned within a position of slavery to Satan. But Jesus Christ has paid our ransom and freed us to live fully (1 Timothy 2:6). Believe His Gospel and you are positioned within grace and the Body of Christ.

Full life awaits with a new purpose. No more frivolous fishing trips, your efforts are pre-blessed and we know that God Himself will go before us making every trip fruitful.

Let’s get fishing!
