Beauty is Skin Deep

“Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone” ~ Dorothy Parker

The above quote is rather convincing, but an astute Christian may notice that this quote allows for an additional element.

“Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone [and sin constricts the soul]”

Christians are often pegged as pessimists for claiming humanity is born into sin and born (to put it lightly) “not good.” To that I say, what an understatement! People have such strong opinions of what is beautiful and may share them, a bit too openly.

You will hear individuals claim that people, nature, poetry, etc. are truly beautiful. But then comes the Christian to spoil it all by suggesting, that there is not one thing on this Earth that sin has not tainted, including people. And yes, this includes “the beautiful people.”

Beauty is only skin deep…

Moreover, the wise Solomon may prefer the adjective “vain” (Proverbs 31:30). Yet, God’s hand is not shortened and He is working all things to the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).

True beauty is found within the Body of Christ. Only here, is beauty beyond the skin.

Those within the Body are clothed in a beautiful robe of righteousness, imputed to them, by the beautiful display of love by Jesus on the Cross and consequently- The empty tomb (Philippians 3:9; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4).

Only Christ’s might is great enough to excavate the rotten spirit and arrogant flesh and refine our inner being as a polished geode fit to good works and His glory (Ephesians 2:10). I write all to suggest

Beauty is soul deep when the love of God has shone” (Romans 5:5)
