Combat of Life

And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me ~ 2 Corinthians 12:9

Recently, I have started training in the combat art of Jiu-Jitsu. And all I have to say is-

I have a lot to learn.

One of the biggest things I need to learn is that unlike what my background is in, which is wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu has a lot to do with fighting from your back.

As a wrestler, you are told your whole life you are told not to go to your back. Nonetheless, in Jiu-Jitsu it is openly accepted and sometimes favored.

As I reflected on the differences between these two arts, I also reflected on the differences in positions I have been with my relationship with Jesus Christ.

I think to the story of Jacob and how he wrestled with God and despite his loss, he prevailed, and this was considered a victory (Genesis 32:24-32).

Saying this, I was eager to utilize some of my wrestling moves, unfortunately, only to be put flat on my back time and time and time again, perhaps with a chokehold in there too.

This is a perfect description of the Christian faith.

When we rely on our self and our power, the Satan and our wicked flesh will put you in a chokehold- Every time.

It is in times like these that maybe the best thing to do is to lay flat on your back and listen to God as he instructs you through your struggle.

God will point out what leverage you do have and you do not have, when to push, when to hang back, and ultimately when to simply trust him.

God bless!
