“But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:57).
The hymn “Victory in Jesus” was written by Eugene M. Barlett (December 24th, 1885, to January 25th, 1941).
Two years before his death from complications of a stroke, the song first appeared in a paperback song book called “Gospel Choruses.” He also published a monthly song magazine called “Herald of Song.” He also wrote two other well-known song titled “Just a Little While” and “Everybody will be Happy over There.”
Now Victory in Jesus is a well-known song but dispensationally, a few things need to be pointed out and changed.
The 2nd stanza says, “I heard about His healing, of His cleansing power revealing, how He made the lame to walk again and caused the blind to see.” This is true, but not related to our victory. It comes from Israel’s kingdom and prophecy (Revelations 4:6).
Also, the last line in the 1st stanza says, “Then I repented of my sin and won the victory.” Whereas a correct verse for the Body of Christ would be, “Then I was forgiven of my sins and won the victory” (Romans 8:3; Colossians 2:13).
Finally, the last verse of the chorus is just too suggestive of water baptism as it sings, “He plunged me to victory be neat the cleansing flood. A better verse would be, “He placed me in Christ Jesus the Son.”
