“You Sunk My Battleship!”

Have you ever played the board game, Battleship?

It is a brilliant strategy game that uses alternating turns in order to inflict damage on each other’s battleships.

The end goal is to, of course, sink all of your opponents’ ships.

The game is a fun yet frustrating engagement that often leaves a person wondering if they really are winning.

It was while I watched my fiance and little cousin play this classic game, that I realized an uncanny relationship with our day to day life.

We may find ourselves in a monotonous, absent-minded exchange of hurtful interactions with the ones we love and interact with.

So it goes, the rhythm of life being dictated by fleshly insecurities and squabbles instead of edifying and uplifting those around us.

I have been in this position and I am sure there is a commonality between you and I. These situations are far too common.

But let me offer a solution.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 says, “Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.”.

Comfort one another. Focus your intentionality.

Comfort and edification are not to be individual actions.

When we comfort others, they are built up. When we are comforted, we are built up.

The relationship is a continuous, Godly exchange that ultimately and undeniably edifies and enriches the Body of Christ.

It may be time we step away from the harmful games we play before we regretfully say, “You sunk my battleship!”
